Psychometrics is the scientific study of measurement in psychology, including the measurement of knowledge, abilities, attitudes, and personality traits. There are several main psychometric approaches.
Classical Test Theory (CTT)
CTT is one of the earliest and most widely used approaches to psychometrics. It is based on the idea that a person’s score on a test can be divided into two parts: true score and error score.
The true score is the person’s actual ability or trait, while the error score is due to factors such as test-taking conditions and measurement error.
Item Response Theory
Item Response Theory is a newer approach to psychometrics; focusing on the characteristics of individual test items rather than the test as a whole.
It is based on the idea that each item on a test can be described by its
- Difficulty. In other words, how hard the item is to answer correctly.
- Discrimination. In other words, how well the item distinguishes between high- and low-ability individuals.
